The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to present Works on Paper, a group exhibition featuring Sadie Barnette, Mimi Lauter, Manuel López, Narsiso Martinez, Mark Thomas Gibson and Gabriella Sanchez from November 3 - December 9, 2022. The show brings together six contemporary artists who make works on paper in various mediums ranging from printmaking to collage and drawing.
Sadie Barnette (b. 1984, Oakland, CA) is an American artist who works primarily with drawing, photography, and large-scale installation. Her work explores black life, personal histories, and the political through material explorations. Recent projects include the reclamation of a 500-page FBI surveillance file amassed on her father during his time with the Black Panther Party. Barnette has a BFA from CalArts and received an MFA in 2012 from University of California, San Diego.
Mimi Lauter (b. 1982, San Francisco, CA) is a Los Angeles-based artist whose oil and soft-pastel works on paper assemble abstracted narratives drawn from subconscious memory, literature, sociopolitical surroundings, and classical mythology. Lauter received her BA at the University of California, Los Angeles and her MFA from University of California, Irvine in 2010.
Manuel López’s (b.1983, East Los Angeles, CA) drawings and paintings are informed by his immediate surroundings. Each piece is a careful examination of elements found around his environment: books, records, boxes, houseplants, various elements from his home, his neighborhood, and studio. He attended East Los Angeles College and transferred to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where he earned his BFA in painting and drawing.
Narsiso Martinez (b. 1977, Oaxaca, Mexico) drawings and mixed media installations include multi-figure compositions set amidst agricultural landscapes. Martinez’s portraits of farmworkers are painted, drawn, and expressed in sculpture on discarded produce boxes collected from grocery stores. He earned his BFA from California State University Long Beach and an MFA degree in drawing and painting from California State University Long Beach in 2017.
Mark Thomas Gibson (b. 1980, Miami, FL) received his BFA from The Cooper Union and his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2013. Mark Thomas Gibson's personal lens on American culture stems from his multifaceted viewpoint as an artist—as a black male, a professor, and an American history buff. These myriad and often colliding perspectives fuel his exploration of contemporary culture through languages of drawing, painting, print, and sculpture.
Gabriella Sanchez (b. 1988, Pasadena, CA) received her BFA in 2011 from Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) in San Diego, CA. She worked for several years as a full time graphic designer, executing projects with Nike, Toyota and other such clients. She began exhibiting her paintings and works on paper in 2016. As a multidisciplinary artist she employs a range of artistic expression from abstraction to portraiture, with a particular focus on both form and language within the perspectives of art, design, and psychology.
A full color brochure with text written by Kate Yiu, our Fall 2022 Atkinson Gallery Art History Student Research and Writing Intern, will accompany the exhibition. With design by SBCC Graphic Design and Photography students Sophie Ashton, Ally Bortolazzo and Francesca Todarello.
