Atkinson Gallery Internships Opportunities for 2023/2024
Name of department/program and person(s) that will supervise the Student Intern(s):
Art Department/Atkinson Gallery/John Connelly, Director
Brief description of the type of project/learning activities proposed for the student interns:
In 2023 - 2024, the Atkinson Gallery's interns will assist with all aspects of the gallery's annual exhibits, including exhibition design, installation/art handling, social media/marketing, and documentation. In addition, the interns will help facilitate the gallery's public education programs, including gallery tours and artist lectures. Skills accessed and built upon in the internships include visual literacy, language, research, writing, applied math, design, and technical skills.
Upcoming exhibits span many topics and media that ensure interns will learn to handle and promote a wide range of work, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, public art, and multimedia installations. The interns will also be integral in assisting the Director and Getty Pacific Standard Time co-curators and artist advisors in implementing and organizing research and activities leading up to our 2024 exhibition Cosmovisión Indígena: The Intersection of Indigenous Knowledge and Contemporary Art. In addition, the interns will help to facilitate our annual scholarship application process and help curate and install our Annual Student Exhibition.
Individual Intern's Responsibilities:
Art History Student Research and Writing Intern (by invitation, one per academic semester 5-7 hours a week, starting date to be determined) will work with the Art Department's Image Resource Center archives and produce written information on artists featured in the Atkinson's exhibitions and programming.
The Curatorial Outreach and Education Intern (must be FWS eligible, one per year or academic semester, 7 -10 hours a week, starting Fall 2023) will assist the director in press and social media engagement, researching and organizing upcoming exhibitions of local, regional, and international artists and presentations of student work.
The Art Handling Installation and Exhibition Design Intern (must be FWS eligible, one per year or academic semester, 7 -10 hours a week, starting Fall 2023) will assist in exhibition design, installations, registrar duties, and maintenance of the exhibition space.
How would the project/activities help the intern gain experiences that will help them in their academic and career pursuits?
The Atkinson Gallery internship provides hands-on training in the museum/gallery field valuable to future artists, art historians, non-profit administrators, teachers, and graphic designers. An internship at the Atkinson Gallery paves the way for future success and prepares students to join a vibrant part of the country's creative economy.

Start date: August 28, 2023
End date: depending on enrollment and availability, through December 2023 or May 2024
