Santa Barbara, CA - For the first exhibition of 2012, Atkinson Gallery is pleased to focus on abstract art in Santa Barbara. The ten artists featured are exemplary of the extensive and insistent history of abstraction in our area. Diverse in style, technique and attitude, they are vital components of Santa Barbara’s visual chronicle.
Certainly, when the history of post WWII contemporary art in Santa Barbara is complied, it will prominently feature abstraction. Some of America’s most noted abstract artists have spent time here: Richard Diebenkorn, Sam Francis, John McCracken, Ken Noland. For many years the Tullis Workshop produced prints with some of these artists and others including Helen Frankenthaler, Charles Arnoldi, Peter Halley and Sean Scully. Legendary abstract collage artist William Dole lived here and was an influential professor at UCSB.
The constant blending of people, ideas and approaches has produced a remarkable variety of art in Santa Barbara. The artists in this exhibition are a mix of native Californians and transplants from across the US, England, and the Isle of Man. Each has spent considerable time in their practice, some for several decades, often in the face of less than desirable public support. The ongoing development and refinement in their work reflects a depth of remarkable passion and commitment. Atkinson Gallery is honored to show the paintings and sculptures of these exceptional artists. This exhibition will be a vibrant representation of the rich legacy of abstract art in our area.
