Santa Barbara, CA -- The Atkinson Gallery at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to present New Landscapes Part I on view November 1 - December 8, 2023. An exhibition of six artists' works whose content embraces land, sky and the sea as subjects.
In the history of western art, landscapes have been a subject of depiction for centuries, from frescoes and mosaics to genre and plein air. With the invention of new technologies starting with the jacquard loom, photography and then the digital, our understanding of landscape has continually expanded and contracted. Today, contemporary artists continue to look both to the past and to the future at this enduring subject to explore the complexity and diversity of the world around us. This exhibition series brings together, in two parts, more than a dozen artists who continue to engage landscape as part of their visual vocabulary and as an important component of their artistic exploration. The exhibition contains many different media but is focused on the two-dimensional apparatuses of painting, textiles, drawing and photography.
The dates for New Landscapes Part II are January 22 - February 28, 2024. Featuring Ann Craven, Porfirio Gutiérrez, Jordan Nassar, Soumya Netrabile, Robyn O’Neil, David Benjamin Sherry and others.
