Suspension: Claudia Pérez-Pavón
March 1- EXTENDED UNTIL April 6, 2013
Opening Reception: Friday, March 1, 5pm-7pm, WC301
Artist Lecture: Friday, March 1, 4pm, BC Forum
Santa Barbara, CA - The Atkinson Gallery will host the first US solo exhibition by award winning Mexican painter Claudia Pérez-Pavón whose emotionally charged oil paintings are created on superimposed translucent surfaces including tightly wound monofilament and acrylic sheets. Through her physical investigation of transparency, Pérez-Pavón conveys nuanced narratives that explore both her subjects’ inner lives and their implied relationships. By literally adding layers, the artist builds meaning and metaphor. To fully understand these paintings, we must investigate them from all angles. With each view the image changes, suggesting that both our understanding and the subject are always fluid and transformative.
Claudia Pérez-Pavón (Mexico City, 1967) studied Philosophy and Fine Arts in Mexico City and Florence, Italy. She has received numerous awards including Mexico’s National Fund for Culture and the Arts' (FONCA's) Young Artist Fellowship in 2000-2001, and currently it's biggest honor, the National System of Creators Fellowship, for 2012-2014. She was also unanimously selected by the jury to receive the prestigious painting prize, the X Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial. Additionally, she has participated in more than 50 shows, including single and group exhibitions throughout Europe and Latin America. For more information: www.claudiaperezpavon.net.
