Beauty in the Mundane
The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious...Whosoever does not know it and can no longer wonder, no longer marvel, is as good as dead, and his eyes are dim.

Santa Barbara, CA - The Atkinson Gallery ANNEX at Santa Barbara City College is pleased to announce an all photography exhibit, Beauty in the Mundane. A student curated exhibition of student work, Beauty in the Mundane highlights the wonder in everyday things, that more often than not get ignored, typically falling into the backdrop of a traditional busy American life.
Featured artwork, although vastly diverse, displays an array of perceptions shown through the artists' individual lenses and creative flare. At the same time, the show demonstrates how similar people are in their collective ability to see beauty in just about anything--if and when one is willing to pause, and take a closer look.
Inspired by the turbulence that rose post the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Cristina Marquez, Atkinson Gallery intern who curated the exhibition, wanted to facilitate a positive space for SBCC students, faculty, and visitors alike to enjoy, reminding the observer that despite harsh realities, beauty also abounds. She was also pleased to see that other students were equally enthusiastic to submit their work, sharing their vision of “beauty in the mundane.”
Featured Artists: Lexi Bakos, Nicole McKee Barr, Emily Clara Corb, Louisa Edwards, Jenna Harkins, Tim Houston, Bradley Lammie, Megan Lee, Michael E. Lee, Janice Muscio, Lauren Nishioku, Elyssa Quesada, Aliana L. Sherrill, Julie Snethen, Sarah Starks, Jesse Tejeda, Alejandro G. Valle, Soren Wilde, Alex Wong.
The exhibit will be semi-permanently displayed, beginning Monday, March 22, 2017, through Friday, December 8, 2017 in the SBCC Foundation hallway on the second floor of the Administration Building. The opening reception will be on Monday, March 20, 2016, from 5pm-7pm. Light snacks and refreshments will be served.
The exhibition and related programs are made possible with generous support from the SBCC Foundation.
